Softball sweeps Wildcats

TUSCALOOSA, AL-All-American first baseman Jackie McClain picked up where she left off last year against the Kentucky Wildcats, as she homered twice in helping the Tide (24-10, 7-1) to a doubleheader sweep of the Wildcats (9-20, 1-10) 7-4 and 2-1.

McClain put the 18th ranked (ESPN.com/USA Softball) Tide on her shoulders in Game 2, when she took the first pitch she saw in the bottom of the sixth inning and hit her second home run of the day breaking a 1-1 tie and giving Alabama a 2-1 victory.

Junior Erin Wright (12-4) picked up the win for the Alabama, scattering three hits while allowing one run and striking out seven batters.

In Game 1, McClain worked her magic in the bottom of the first inning. She got Alabama going following a walk to Jackie Wilkins, McClain took a 3-1 pitch and put Alabama on the board tying the game at 2-2.

The two teams traded runs until Alabama finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth to break open a 3-3 game. Lacy Prejean led off the inning with a double and following two outs, Angela Johnson doubled, scoring Prejean. Jennifer Reach then singled and advanced to second on the throw home, scoring Ramsey on the play. Ashley Courtney followed with a single that scored Reach and went to second on the throw home. Wilkins followed up with a single of her own scoring Courtney and staking Alabama to a 7-3 lead.

Kentucky tacked on another run but it was all they could muster as they dropped the 7-4 decision.

Jennifer Wright (6-3) got the win, going the full seven innings allowing two earned runs while striking out a season high eight batters.

In last year's series with the Wildcats, McClain hit .500 with one home run, four RBI, four runs scored, and four walks.

McClain finished the day 4-7 with four RBI, two runs scored, two home runs and a double.

The Crimson Tide and the Wildcats will get together for the final game of the series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
