Bama Basketball Blistered By Purdue
Sophomore forward Tony Mitchell led the Crimson Tide with 14 points and nine rebounds while freshman guard Trevor Releford added 12 points and senior forward Chris Hines chipped in nine points.
"I told the guys after the game I felt like we gave the effort we needed to give," Alabama Coach Anthony Grant said. "We just have to get smarter, more disciplined, we've got to do a better job with our execution against the caliber of opponent we played tonight and we're going to play throughout the year."
After trading baskets to open the game, Alabama used an 8-0 run midway through the first half to seize a 16-13 lead at the 8:29 mark. Mitchell bookended the run with a pair of free throws to start and an alley-oop slam on an assist from senior guard Senario Hillman to cap it off. Senior guard Charvez Davis and Releford added a pair of baskets in between for the Tide.
Following the Alabama run, Purdue used a 17-0 run to take a 30-20 lead into at the half.
The Tide was playing its first true road game of the season against the Boilermakers, who are undefeated at home, having won their games at Mackey Arena by an average of nearly 20 points.
"It's an awesome environment," Grant said."It's my first time experiencing it. It's very loud. It's very tough to communicate with our team on the floor. Getting experience like this in this environment against a tough opponent can only help you. We have to take lessons from this game that we need to learn and use that to help us get better."
Alabama cut the Boilermakers' lead to 32-24 at the outset of the second half on a basket by Releford, but could get no closer the rest of the way as Purdue held a double-digit lead for the final 17:41 of the game.
The Tide held the Boilermakers scoreless for nearly four minutes from the 14:07 mark of the second half to the 10:17 juncture, but could only cut into the lead by four points. Following the scoreless stretch, Purdue used an 11-0 run to all but put the game out of reach.
Purdue guard E'Twaun Moore scored a game-high 23 points for the Boilermakers. Center JaJuan Johnson added 17.
Alabama (4-4) will have a week off before traveling to Rhode Island on Dec. 11 to take on the Providence Friars.
