Alabama Women Fall At South Carolina
"Again, we had opportunities in this game, but we could not score," Alabama Coach Wendell Hudson said. "We need to keep working at it and find a way to get the ball in the basket. There were points in the game where we got close, but the difference was South Carolina made the shots and we did not."
Junior Alicia Mitcham led Alabama in scoring with 11 points. She was followed by senior LaToya King, who added 10 points. Mitcham and freshman Kaneisha Horn each had five rebounds to lead the Tide on the boards.
Junior Ericka Russell hit the first shot of the game giving the Tide an early 2-0 edge. The Gamecocks jumped in front on the next possession with a three and led until Alabama was able to tie it up with a jumper from Horn at the 15:52 mark. From there, South Carolina would pull ahead on a 7-2 run over the next four minutes for the 12-7 lead. The Gamecocks built up an eight-point lead by the 8:00 mark before a 5-0 run by the Tide over the next 40 seconds cut its deficit down to three. South Carolina would go on to outscore Alabama 16-11 down the stretch for a 33-25 lead at the half.
King converted on a three-point play to open the second sparking an 11-6 run by the Tide that set the score at 39-36 with just under four minutes off the clock. The Gamecocks would respond with a 9-0 run over the next seven minutes to take a 48-36 lead. Alabama pulled within eight but would get no closer for the duration of the contest.
Next up, Alabama heads to Gainesville to take on the Florida Gators on Thursday, Jan. 27. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
