Alabama Gymnasts Make Big Leap

The Alabama gymnastics team jumped five places in the national rankings this week, landing at No. 6 on the heels of its best score of the season, a 196.325, to beat Boise State last Friday.

The rankings are based on overall average at this point in the season and Coach Sarah Patterson's Alabama team went from a 195.125 average last week to a 195.525 this week after posting its best score of the season by nearly a point against the Broncos.

Florida remains at No. 1 this week, followed by No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Utah and No. 5 Oklahoma. Alabama is ranked second on the vault, third on the floor exercise, 10th on the balance beam and 25th on the uneven bars.

Individually, seven different Tide gymnasts are ranked in the top 20 this week, including five that are in the top 10 and three who are ranked on multiple events.

Senior Kayla Hoffman is 11th and freshman Sarah DeMeo is 20th in the all-around. Hoffman is also sixth on the vault and 13th on the floor exercise while DeMeo is sixth on the balance beam. Freshman Diandra Milliner is fifth on the vault and 13th on the floor exercise.

Junior Geralen Stack-Eaton is eighth on the vault while sophomore Ashley Sledge is 13th. Freshman Hannah Toussaint is sixth on the floor exercise and sophomore Becca Alexin is 12th on the uneven bars.

Alabama is on the road the next two weeks, traveling to Ft. Worth, Texas, for Metroplex Challenge on Saturday followed by a trip Gainesville, Fla., on Feb. 4 to take on defending SEC Champion Florida Gators.
