Tide's Mitchell SEC Player Of Week

There was no real reason to expect much less from Tony Mitchell. The Crimson Tide forward seems to get better each week. There was a lot on the line when he gave perhaps his finest performance Saturday night against Arkansas in Coleman Coliseum.

A sold out crowd of 15,383 in Coleman Coliseum had an appreciation of what Tony Mitchell did in leading Alabama to victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks. So did the Southeastern Conference, which on Monday named him the SEC Player of the Week.

Mitchell, a 6-6 forward, led Alabama to the Western Division title with a pair of wins over LSU and Arkansas. In the win over the Razorbacks he turned in a career-high 27 points with nine rebounds, six on offense, three assists, two blocks and two steals. His work on the offensive glass and defense led to 22 points to make him responsible for 49 of the team's 69 points. He converted on 11 of his 15 shots and was a perfect 10-of-10 from inside the three-point arc.

Three of those shots came from inside the three-inch arc, thunderous dunks that ignited the crowd and his teammates and, in the words of Bama Coach Anthony Grant, seemed to take the air out of the Razorbacks.

In the week's opener at LSU, he scored 13 points in a team-high 38 minutes to average 20 points and 6.5 rebounds on the week. Mitchell has scored 20 or more points in five of his last six games.

Mitchell and the Crimson Tide will return to action on Wednesday evening when Alabama hosts Auburn. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.CST in Coleman Coliseum. Alabama defeated Auburn in Auburn, 68-58, earlier this year.
