Alabama Gymnast Gets SEC Award

Alabama's Sarah DeMeo was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman Gymnast of the Week the league office announced Tuesday. The Overland Park, Kan., native helped the Crimson Tide to a season-high 197.675 and its first win at Georgia since 2005 last Friday.

"Sarah's development of a team mentality has been critical to our success this season," Alabama Coach Sarah Patterson said. "She has been extremely coachable and open to all suggestions on how to become a better collegiate athlete. Her performance last weekend in Athens is indicative of how far she's come and how crucial she is to our continued improvement as a team."

DeMeo scored a career-high 9.875 on the vault at Georgia, helping UA tie its season-high mark of 49.5 as well as notching a 9.825 to help Alabama get off to a strong start on the uneven bars.

She also scored a 9.825 on the balance beam, part of the Tide's 49.525, the highest team total in the country this year by more than a tenth of a point and the fourth-best in Alabama history.

DeMeo is the second Tide rookie to bring home the league's freshman of the week honor, joining Diandra Milliner who earned the accolade after Alabama's meet against Auburn. Overall, it was the Tide's fifth weekly conference honor with senior Kayla Hoffman, who has earned the honor twice this season, and junior Geralen Stack-Eaton winning SEC Gymnast of the Week recognition.

DeMeo and her Tide teammates remain on the road this Friday, traveling to Michigan for UA's last regular-season away meet. Alabama then returns home Friday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m. for its regular-season finale against SEC rival LSU. Tickets are available online at RollTide.com and at the Alabama Ticket Office (205.348.2262) located in the lobby of Coleman Coliseum.
