Tide Golf Leading In South Carolina

AIKEN, S.C. – The No. 3 Alabama men's golf team has a four-shot lead after the first two rounds of the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate on Monday on the 6,617-yard, par-70 Palmetto Golf Club.

Alabama opened with an 8-over par 288 in round one and backed that up with a 3-under 277 in the second round to surge into the lead at 5-over-par 565. Liberty is in second place at 569 after rounds of 291 and 280. Virginia and Clemson are tied for third at 3-over-par 571 with Chattanooga rounding out the top five at 6-over 574.

UA junior Bud Cauley shot two-blistering rounds of 4-under 66 for a six-shot lead in the medalist chase over Liberty's Preston Dembowiak, East Carolina's Harold Varner and Clemson's Crawford Reeves.

True freshman Cory Whitsett shot a tournament-low 65 in the second round to move to 1-over-par 141 and tied for 10th position after an opening-round 76. Hunter Hamrick is tied for 36th after steady rounds of 73 and 74. True freshmen Bobby Wyatt and Trey Mullinax are both one shot back of Hamrick at 8-over-par 148 in a tie for 44th.

Other Southeastern Conference schools include Vanderbilt in sixth after two rounds at 7-over 575 while Kentucky is 17th at 604.

Alabama will play with Liberty and Virginia in Tuesday's final round as the Crimson Tide go in search of its fourth victory of the season and is second straight.

Alabama's reserves spent the day in action at the Samford Intercollegiate at the Limestone Springs Golf Club in Oneonta. Darkness suspended the day's second round, but the Crimson Tide finished round one in second place at 5-over-par 293.

Hunter Slatton paced Alabama with a 2-under-par round of 70 and is in ninth place after 18 holes. Lee Knox is tied for 11th at even-par 72 while Scott Strohmeyer is tied for 15th at 1-over 73. Hunter Bronson shot 78 and is tied for 54th.

UA will complete its second round Tuesday morning before concluding the tournament with round three immediately following.
