Womens Golf Second At Liz Murphey

ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 3 University of Alabama women's golf team posted a 2-under-par 286 on the first day of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic to move into second place, two strokes behind No. 4 Purdue.

The Classic is using a "best ball" team format, with the low four individual scores from each hole comprising the team's counting tally as the day progresses. Traditionally, the low four rounds at the end of the day are added together to determine the team score.

Individually, Alabama freshman Stephanie Meadow led the Crimson Tide on the opening day with a 1-over-par 73 that featured an even-par back nine with a birdie and two bogeys on the front nine. Meadow's round tied for the eighth best of the day on the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga. Florida State's Hannah Thompson and Duke's Aleja Cangrejo lead the field with matching 2-under-par 70s.

Brooke Pancake and Jennifer Kirby each posted a 2-over-par 74 with three birdies for each on the scorecard. Hannah Collier shot 4-over while Camilla Lennarth was 5-over at 77 to help give the Tide a five-stroke cushion over third-place Duke and Georgia.

The Tide will return to the course for the second of three rounds on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. CDT.
