Alabama Rowing Varsity 8+ Wins

The Alabama rowing team won the Second Varsity 8+ race against Conference USA rival Central Florida Saturday afternoon on the Black Warrior River.

"The Second Varsity 8 really put together a nice race," Alabama Coach Larry Davis said. "They came out on fire and executed like they are capable of against tough competition. All our crews were a little fatigued from all the travel associated with our trip to California, but I think the Second Varsity 8 managed it very well from a mental standpoint today and powered through."

The UCF meet was the Crimson Tide's second annual Power of Pink event sponsored by Tuscaloosa Toyota to help raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer. The rowers were in pink for the event, which is an Alabama athletics department-wide effort to fight the disease.

It was also Senior Day on the Black Warrior River and the Tide honored Jessica Allaway, Daniella Barone, Amelia Houghton, Alissa Kranz, Lauren Miller, Laura Skaggs and Leigh Erin Waddell in their last home race.

The Second Varsity 8+ posted a time of 6:35.0, beating the Golden Knights by seven seconds. Alabama fell to Central Florida in the First and Second Varsity 4+ as well as the First Varsity 8+ races. In the Novice 8+ race, Alabama finished second and third to UCF.

The Tide posted a 7:27.1 and 7:48.0 in the First and Second Varsity 4+ respectively. In the Novice 8+, Alabama's first boat crossed the line at 6:56.4, while the second boat clocked a 7:26.5. In the First Varsity 8+, the Tide finished the day off with a with a 6:29.5.

Alabama returns to action next weekend at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
