Bama's Kilcrease SEC Pitching Honoree

It was a daunting task. Nathan Kilcrease was pitching for Alabama, going up against the nation's second ranked team and defending national champion, South Carolina. Pitching for the Gamecocks was their ace, Michael Roth, who came into the game with a 10-2 record and 1.35 earned run average.

Moreover, the pressure was on Alabama, which needed a win to get into the Southeastern Conference.

Nathan Kilcrease is one of those rare athletes whose stature isn't measured in feet and inches or pounds. He's the one with the big heart and overflowing competitive juices.

Kilcrease got the job done with a complete game, five-hit, 2-1 victory over the Gamecocks. He allowed just one unearned run and just one extra base hit.

For his performance, the senior from Phenix City was named SEC Pitcher of the Week.

South Carolina averaged 10 hits per game entering the series. He used 113 pitches to record his sixth win of the season and pitched out of bases loaded jams in both the first and fifth innings, surrendering just one unearned run. He allowed just one hit in the final four innings, retiring 12 of the final 15 batters he faced.

The victory clinched the Crimson Tide's seventh conscutive berth in the SEC Baseball Tournament.

The complete game marked the second of the season for Kilcrease and the third of his career. He posted a complete-game shutout of Kentucky on March 25.

Kilcrease has a 6-2 record for the season and is tied for the team lead in victories. He has a 3.35 ERA in 86 innings pitched with 68 strikeouts, while holding opponents to a .264 batting average. Kilcrease is second on the team in innings pitched and strikeouts.

The fourth-year senior has a 21-10 career record, and is tied for eighth all-time at Alabama for victories.

He has made 86 career pitching appearances and is one appearance shy of tying the school record. Kilcrease, who is listed on rosters as 5-6 and 160, will tie that record when Alabama opens play in the SEC Tournament against Arkansas at 9:30 a.m. CDT Wednesday at Regions Park in Hoover.
