Bud Cauley Has Nice Start In Open

Bud Cauley – he's William Cauley on the U.S. Open Golf Championship scoreboard – had a nice opening round performance in his first tournament as a professional.

Cauley, who completed his junior season at Alabama this spring and then turned professional, is making his debut at Congressional in Bethesda, Md., just outside Washington, D.C. In Thursday's first round he had two bogeys and two birdies for an even par round of 71. Play was underway with Y.E. Yang and Francesco Molinari leading at three-under-par.

Cauley had already finished even with the likes of Heath Slocum, Angel Cabrera, Padraig Harrington, and Bubba Watson.

He was ahead of established players such as Matt Kuchar, Kevin Streelman, Ernie Els, Paul Caswey, Bill Haas, Anthony Kim, Luke Donald, Jim Furyk, Justin Rose, and Adam Scott.

Play in the prestigious tournament continues through Sunday.
