Alabama now in the mix

Trae Elston, three-star cornerback from Oxford, Ala., visited Tuscaloosa last week. The in-state school hasn't been a contender for his signature since the beginning of his recruitment. The unofficial visit changed things. Andrew Bone has the latest news..

"We went down to Alabama for a little visit," said Trae Elston. "I liked the trip a lot. I talked to coach Bobby Williams. He told me they are recruiting me now as an athlete.

"Coach Williams said they looked at the depth chart. We watched my highlight film. He said they like me at receiver. I then had a one-on-one conversation with coach Saban. He wants me to attend the camp in July. He wants to evaluate the position that is best for me."

Alabama recruiting Elston as an athlete has changed his tone regarding the Tide.

"I can say Alabama is definitely in the race now," he said. "I have always liked receiver. I played it since I was little. My sophomore year I had to play defense because that's the only way I could start. I would like to play receiver in college.

"Alabama is still behind some of my favorites like Clemson and LSU, but I can say they are now ahead of Auburn. Alabama is always going to win and contend for championships. Their academics are real strong. Coach Saban can get you to the NFL. You don't have to worry about putting on weight because they have a great weight room program."

Elston has time to think of his many options with a decision not expected until signing day.

"Some schools have talked to me about playing receiver," said Elston. "Clemson has some real good receivers. They have told me they want me as a DB. LSU is saying DB, but they are also looking at me as a receiver. Miami is recruiting me as an athlete."

Elston will return to Tuscaloosa for the Alabama camp July 17. He and teammate Kwon Alexander will participate in the Nike 7-on-7 tournament at Oregon July 6.
