Nick's Kids Gives To Charities
"This is an emotional day for me," Alabama Coach Nick Saban said. "This is the thing I look forward to the most. It is part of a legacy that my family and my father tried to start back in West Virginia where no man stands as tall as when he stoops to help a child. My mother said, ‘If you are ever going to do anything, continue your father's legacy of trying to help young people.' I never, in my wildest dreams, thought we would have the support and resources to do what we have been able to do in the last few years in Alabama."
The money is raised through the annual Nick's Kids Golf Tournament, speaking engagements by Nick and Terry Saban, as well as individual donations. This year, the Sabans have also assisted in raising money for various areas affected by the tornado that hit Alabama on April 27.
"We are so pleased that we are able to make a contribution to really help our community and give back to our community in some type of way," Saban added. "This is what we feel we want to do for our community in terms of serving others. I cannot tell you how much this means to me and my family. We appreciate those who support Nick's Kids and help us do what we do. This is really a team effort."
Joining the Sabans at the luncheon were student-athletes Quinton Dial, Jerrell Harris and Jeremy Shelley, as well as play-by-play announcer Eli Gold, who were on hand for autographs.
In addition to their work with Nick's Kids, the Sabans have also been generous in terms of their personal donation to The University of Alabama for scholarships. In June of 2008, Nick and Terry made a $1 million pledge to The University for first-generation scholarships.
