Tide's Fitterer Named Pre-Season All-SEC
Fitterer is coming off a stellar sophomore campaign for Alabama where she led the SEC in kills per set with 3.92 in conference play. For her outstanding play, she earned All-SEC Second Team honors, becoming the 18th player in Crimson Tide history to be recognized by the conference.
"It's great for Kayla to be recognized as one of the top players heading into the season by the SEC coaches," head coach Ed Allen said. "Kayla's coming off an injury, so for us to be successful we will need her to return to the form that's garnered All-SEC awards. She's going to be a cornerstone for this program over the next two years."
The Edwardsville, Ill., native finished the 2010 season with 403 kills (3.73 kps), ranking second in the SEC in total kills and kills per set. Fitterer racked up 11 double-doubles last season, nine of which came against SEC opponents, bringing her career total to a dozen. She started all 30 matches for the Tide in 2010 and led the team in kills on 17 occasions.
She was named SEC Player of the Week on Nov. 8, 2010, following a 34-kill, 24-dig performance in the Tide's five-set win over Kentucky on Nov. 7. Fitterer's 34 kills were the highest of the season in a match of all SEC teams and the most by an Alabama player since 2004.
On Monday, the SEC announced the preseason coaches' poll. The Tide was picked to finish fifth in the SEC West.
The season begins with the Hampton Inn Bama Bash on August 26-27 at newly renovated Foster Auditorium. Alabama opens the tournament, and the season, against Alabama State at noon on Friday, Aug. 26. The six-match tournament also features Texas State and Austin Peay.
The Crimson Tide will play 14 home matches this season and opens SEC play against Arkansas on Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. Other key SEC matches include Sunday contests against Florida (Oct. 16) and Auburn (Oct. 30). The final home weekend of the season has the Tide hosting Kentucky on Nov. 11 and Tennessee on Nov. 13.
