Five things to watch

Andrew Bone takes a look at the headlines leading into the 2011 high school football season.

Will Jameis Winston add to legacy

The Hueytown quarterback is one of the best athletes to come out of the state of Alabama. His team is ranked No. 3 in Class 5A. Winston led Hueytown to the quarterfinals a year ago before losing to eventual champion, Spanish Fort. Winston has his goal set on the trophy at the end of the season.

Prattville overrated or real deal

The Lions are accustomed to a nationally ranked team and enter the 2011 season as the No. 1 ranked team in the country. They are loaded with talent on both sides of the ball with close to 20 D-I prospects in the 2012 and 2013 classes. They face a tough test this weekend facing St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) at Hoover.

Sweet Water still rolling

Sweet Water has won five Class 1A state titles since 2004. They are one of the most impressive high school football programs in the region, and they'll play up several classifications in more than one game. They open this week against Thomasville (4A) followed by Gordo (3A). They will also play Handley (3A) and Leroy (2A) this fall. They are ranked No. 1 team in 1A. Watch for 2013 running back Deon Waters to put up big numbers.

Looking for No. 1--2013

Several prospects will challenge for the top player in the state. An offensive lineman like Austin Golson or Bradley Bozeman will make their case. Skill players like Jeremy Johnson or Earnest Robinson are in contention. Defensive linemen Rod Crayton and Dee Liner are in the mix. Small school star O.J. Howard plans to make a lot of noise to jump all of them for the No. 1 spot.

Super Six in Tuscaloosa

High school coaches and players are focused on the games this weekend. One game at a time, but the ultimate goal is to reach the state finals and compete in the Super Six championships. This year the games return to Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
