Three Tide Golfers Earn Match Play

ERIN, Wis. – All three Alabama golfers that qualified for this year's U.S. Amateur at Erin Hills also played their way into the top 64 after stroke play to qualify for match play.

Sophomore Cory Whitsett led the way among the three Alabama players with a 5-under-par total of 137 to finish the 36 holes of stroke play in a tie for eighth place. The Houston, Texas, native carded rounds 69 and 68 to earn a spot in match play against David Kim in the round of 64.

Incoming freshman Justin Thomas of Goshen, Ky., finished one stroke back of Whitsett in a tie for 13th position after stroke play. He opened with a 4-under 68 in round one and then shot 70 in round two to qualify for match play against Scotland's Michael Stewart.

Senior Hunter Hamrick fired a scorching second-round 66 to earn his berth into match play. He opened with a 74 and entered the second round outside of the top 64, but the Montgomery native finished in a tie for 31st to move into match play against John Hahn of Las Vegas, Nev.

After a rain delay pushed back part of the second round and delayed the start of match play, there will be two rounds of match play held on Thursday. Two wins on Thursday will move a golfer into the round of 16.
