Williams declares for NBA draft

TUSCALOOSA -- Mo Williams, a sophomore point guard on the University of Alabama basketball team, has declared for the upcoming NBA draft.

The Jackson, Miss., native filed his early entry as an underclassman on Thursday.

"I do not have an agent and I'm leaving the door open to return to school and the (Alabama) team," said Williams who was the 2002 Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year.

"I want to leave my options open. Hopefully I will get invited to the NBA Pre-Draft Camp in Chicago so I can get further evaluated. I'll base my final decision on those evaluations and workouts before the draft. If things are not going as planned, I will withdraw my name and return to school."

The Early Entry deadline for the 2003 NBA draft for underclassmen is Monday, May 12. The NBA Pre-Draft Camp, which is by invitation only, will be June 3-6 at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. June 19 is the deadline for Early Entry Entrant withdrawal for the June 26 NBA draft.

Williams, a 2001 McDonalds High School All-American, was the Sporting News National Freshman of the Year in 2002. He has started in every game Alabama has played, 64 straight, in his two seasons with the Crimson Tide.

Williams averaged 16.4 points and 3.9 assists and rebounds this past season. As a freshman he averaged 10.4 points, 4.5 assists and 3.9 rebounds a game.
