Coaches Put Tide's Green On All-SEC

Southeastern Conference basketball coaches have selected a pre-season All-SEC team that includes three Alabama players, one on the first team and two on the second team. It is no surprise that the Bama selections are the returning starters.

Alabama, which opens the season at 7 p.m. Friday against North Florida in Coleman Coliseum, put senior JaMychal Green on the first team, and junior Tony Mitchell and sophomore Trevor Releford on the second team. Eight men were selected to the first team and nine on the second unit.

Green is a 6-8, 228-pound forward from Montgomery, who was first team All-SEC last year. Mitchell, a 6-6, 210-pound wing from Swainsboro, Ga., was second team All-SEC last year. Releford, a 6-1, 180-pound point guard from Kansas City, was Freshman All-SEC last year.

This is the eighth year the SEC coaches have selected a pre-season team.

There were votes for a total of 32 players. Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt all had three selections each. Vandy's three were all on the first team, while Florida had two on the first team and one on the second team and Kentucky (like Alabama) had one first team selection and two second team choices.

Mississippi State with one first team pick and one second team selection was the only other school with more than one representative.

Nine schools were represented with no one chosen from Auburn, South Carolina, or Tennessee.

The coaches do not predict an order of finish.
