Alabama Athletes Earn Degrees

Saturday was winter commencement at The University of Alabama and more than 40 Crimson Tide athletes were involved, including a dozen members of the Bama football team.



Alabama football had 10 graduates playing this fall and added 12 more to that list Saturday, meaning the Crimson Tide will have 22 graduates dressed for the BCS National Championship Game against LSU in New Orleans on Jan. 9. No fewer than 10 of those graduates would be considered first team players.

The Crimson Tide football team will resume practice Monday. Bama has been off the practice field since the 42-14 win over Auburn to end regular season play.

The football winter graduates are:

Undra Billingsley, Robert Lester, John Michael Boswell, Marquis Maze, Brad Smelley, Christopher Jordan, Courtney Upshaw, Darius Hanks, Dont'a Hightower, DeQuan Menzie, Brandon Lewis, and Brandon Gibson, who earned his master's degree.

  Those 12 join Hardie Buck, Josh Chapman, Nick Gentry, Barrett Jones, Phelon Jones, Alfred McCullough, Morgan Ogilvie, Chris Underwood, William Vlachos and Alex Watkins, who all graduated prior to the start of the 2011 season.  

Three former members of the football squad, Wesley Neighbors, Milton Talbert and Rob Ezell also earned their degrees this semester.

Cross country graduates include David May. Stephen Payne, Fred Samoei, Joel Rop, Julius Bor and Emmanuel Bor, who received his second undergraduate degree.

From the softball squad, Amanda Locke and Whitney Larsen are graduates, as are Joel Lynch, Megan Williams, Rachel Robbs, Audra Frimpong, and Angelica Howard from the track team.

From the soccer team, Victoria Frederick received her bachelor's degree while teammate Colleen Posey earned her master's degree.

Ashley Priess is the first UA gymnast to earn her degree in less than four years and will finish her senior season while pursuing a master's degree. NCAA Today's Top VIII Award winner Kayla Hoffman, captain of last year's NCAA Championship team, also earned her degree this semester, and gymnast Morgan Dennis earned her master's degree.

From the baseball team, Glenn Harbin received his undergraduate degree and, David Kindred received his master's degree.

Andrew Steele joined the ranks of men's basketball graduates.

Degrees were awarded to women's golfer Camilla Lennarth and vollyeball's Kayla Schmidt .

Men's tennis player Vikram Reddy received his bachelor's degree and women's tennis player Maria Muller was awarded her master's degree. Lauren Miller and Daniella Barone from the rowing team and swimmers Daniel Armstrong, Daniel Rozick and Paige Troyan were graduated.
