Korren Kirven talks Tide official visit

Korren Kirven, four-star defensive tackle from Lynchburg-Brookville, Va., took an official visit this weekend to Alabama. Kirven has already visited Tennessee, and the two SEC schools are battling for his signature. Andrew Bone talked with the elite prospect.

"The visit was great," said Korren Kirven. "It was great to hang out with the players. Cyrus Kouandjio and Jeoffrey Pagan were my hosts. We hung out and chilled. We talked about the program. They kept it real with me. They told me what the deal is down there. It was real good.

"My favorite part about the visit--I like to eat. The food was real good. It was also good getting to talk to the coaches more and seeing the campus. Just to see where everything is. That was the biggest thing I enjoyed. I went out with the players, and that was fun."

Kirven spent a lot of time with Alabama head coach Nick Saban and defensive line coach Chris Rumph.

"The coaches were talking about a lot," he said. "I spent the most time with coach Saban. Coach Saban talked about character. He talked about how he wants his players to have character. He talked about how they can develop me as a player.

"We talked about Joe Paterno a little bit. We talked abut the draft and the players entering the draft this year. He talked about how they may have close to 10-15 players get drafted. That was a big thing. We talked about the jerseys at Alabama and Nike.

"Coach Rumph and I talked more about football. We talked about the 3-4 and 4-3 defense. They are a 3-4 school, but use 4-3 more. We talked about the playbook. They want me to play more of a defensive end position. I would be used mostly at the 5-technique. I am versatile though.

"Coach Rumph is funny. He keeps it real with me. He always has jokes. He keeps it real with you. He doesn't feed you any BS. We have a pretty strong relationship. I got to meet his wife. It's a big thing to talk about family."

The lineman discussed more of his interest in the 2011 BCS National Champions.

"I just like the Crimson Tide, Roll Tide," said Kirven. "Alabama is a school known for football. They are one of the top sports names in the U.S. along with the Lakers, Yankees and Cowboys.

"They win championships. They won two championships in the past three years. Coach Saban has done a lot of good things and will continue to do great things at Alabama."

Kirven travels next weekend to Virginia Tech for his final official visit. A decision will take place on signing day.

"I don't have any favorites right now," Kirven said. "Everyone is going to find out on signing day. ESPN plans on coming here and will set up the announcement. I am kind of going back and forth on my decision. I kind of know where I am going though."
