Alabama Storylines: Remember when

National signing day is Wednesday, February 1st with the Tide's class sitting in the top spot in the SEC, at least for a few more days. We take a look back at several signing day events in which Alabama fans will remember for a long time.

2006: Andre Smith's houndstooth

This five-star, and rated the No. 1 offensive lineman in the country, set the bar high when he sported a houndstooth hat on National Signing Day creating a recruiting buzz throughout the country. His signature moved was later used by Jerrell Harris in 2008. Smith lived up to the high expectations with the Outland Trophy in 2008, was a First Team All-American and first round draft pick after three years at the Capstone.

Class of 2008

Nick Saban's No. 1 recruiting class after a year in Tuscaloosa was special. The team went on to accomplish many accolades including two national championships. Alabama had their first-ever Heisman Trophy winner in Mark Ingram, another Outland Trophy winner in Barrett Jones and nine All-Americans. National Signing Day was a monster day for the Crimson Tide with the announcements of Julio Jones, Marcell Dareus and Jerrell Harris.

The big haul in '09

This was Alabama's biggest signing day since Nick Saban's arrival at Alabama. Seven players committed to the Tide on National Signing Day. Dre Kirkpatrick announced his commitment on ESPN asking the crowd if they were ready. Trent Richardson kept everyone on the edge of their seats until the afternoon before announcing he would sign with the Tide. Recruit X (Kenny Bell) was also made famous that year when he switched his commitment from LSU to Alabama.

No big surprises

A very uneventful signing day for the Crimson Tide in 2010. Arie Kouandjio had announced his decision on signing day eve, and Alabama did not sign anyone else on NSD.

Cyrus Kouandjio fiasco

Alabama waited last year on the decision of one player and was very surprised by the first response. Kouandjio had long been considered an Alabama lean especially with his brother in Tuscaloosa. He committed to Auburn on ESPN. He had some unhappy parents when the cameras were turned off. Kouandjio switched a few days later to Alabama to seal the class of 2011.

Any surprises?

The class of 2012 might pull off a surprise. Players are available who could still add some signing day smiles for Tide fans with players such as Korren Kirven, Kwon Alexander, Eddie Goldman, Dalvin Tomlinson, ... this signing day is more than ready for their storyline.
