Scout.com Rating: Four-star
Scout.com Rank: No. 15 Defensive Tackle
Size: 6-foot-4, 280-pounds
School: Lynchburg, Va. (Brookeville)
Projected Position: Defensive End
Stats: Kirven played on the defensive line and fullback for Brookeville High School. He broke his leg during the season.
Strengths/Improvements: "I broke my fibula and dislocated my ankle. Luckily there were not any torn ligaments. I know the difference in coming in and playing as a defensive line instead of like a running back or wide receiver as a true freshman. But, I think if I push myself with this rehab and do what I'm supposed to do, I think I can do it. It doesn't matter where I play or what scheme I play. I can play a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme. I can play anywhere on the line. It all makes no difference to me."
Recruiting Competition: Virginia Tech, Tennessee
Why Alabama: "I just like the Crimson Tide, Roll Tide! Alabama is a school known for football. They are one of the top sports names in the U.S. along with the Lakers, Yankees and Cowboys. They win championships. They won two championships in the past three years. Coach Saban has done a lot of good things and will continue to do great things at Alabama.
"I love the coaches, facilities and everything about it. It's a great feel down there. They put out great defensive linemen. Coach Rumph is funny. He keeps it real with me. He always has jokes. He keeps it real with you. He doesn't feed you any BS. We have a pretty strong relationship."
Coach Quotes: "He's great," said Brookeville head coach Jeff Woody. "He's an all-around football player. Great athlete with great size. He's got God-given ability, God-given talent. At this point in time, he's got to make something of that. He's got to get in that weight room and got to get bigger so he can compete on that next level. That'd be the only thing that I see that he needs right now.
"He's great in the hips. He's got great lower body strength. He needs to increase his upper body strength. Without Korren's services, we were able to go win that state championship game, but definitely it was disconcerting to me that we were without an All-American, four-star recruit at defensive tackle.
"During the season he was unblockable. He's very physical, and he plays with his hips and he's able to establish the line of scrimmage two yards deep into the opponent's backfield. He plays with his hands well. We see a lot of folks trying to trap a defensive tackle. You can't trap him. He's very aware of what's going on. He's a smart football player. His awareness level is very high. He's a good kid and fun to work with."
Andrew Bone says: Korren Kirven is a major addition to the Crimson Tide's defensive front. Kirven has the ability to play on the outside or inside in Tuscaloosa. He has a good body and is athletic for his size. He is a powerful prospect who plays with great leverage and knows how to use his hands. The great thing about Kirven is he is only 17-years old. He has a chance to really blossom.
