Five Tide Golfers In Major Tourney

SEA ISLAND, Ga. – The University of Alabama men's golf team will be well-represented at the prestigious Jones Cup Invitational being held this weekend at Ocean Forest Golf Club. Five Crimson Tide golfers are in the 90-man, invitation only tournament today (Friday, Feb. 3) through Sunday.

Alabama senior Hunter Hamrick along with sophomores Cory Whitsett and Bobby Wyatt will also be joined by freshman Justin Thomas and junior Lee Knox. The Jones Cup is a 54-hole stroke play tournament that was founded in 2001. It was played every other year from 2001-07 but became a yearly event beginning in 2009.

Hamrick and Whitsett will be each making their fourth appearance in the tournament, after competing in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 editions of the event. Hamrick finished tied for eighth in 2010 and 2011 while posting a tie for 31st in his previous appearance. Whitsett finished tied for 24th in 2009, tied for seventh in 2010 and tied for 39th last year.

Wyatt will be each making his third appearance at Ocean Forest, as he finished tied for fifth in the 2010 tournament and tied for 16th last winter. Thomas and Knox are making their second appearances in the Jones Cup Invitational.

Additionally, former Crimson Tide golfers Michael Thompson and Gator Todd finished tied for third and tied for seventh, respectively, in the 2007 Jones Cup Invitational. Bud Cauley finished third last season, missing out on a playoff by one shot.

The Rees Jones designed Ocean Forest Golf Club, which opened in 1995 and has hosted the 1998 Georgia State Amateur Championship, the 1999 Southern Amateur Championship and the 2001 Walker Cup Matches. The Jones Cup Invitational brings together many of the finest amateurs from the United States and abroad for this three-day competition.

The Alabama golf team will begin the 2012 portion of its schedule on Feb. 19 at the Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
