Alabama Freshman Wins Jones Cup

SEA ISLAND, Ga. – University of Alabama freshman Justin Thomas won the prestigious Jones Cup Invitational on Sunday at Ocean Forest Golf Club. All five Crimson Tide golfers competing in the event finished in the top 20 on the par-72, 7,321-yard layout.

Thomas, a native of Goshen, Ky., was the only player in the field to shoot in the 60s on Sunday – and just the second player in three rounds to break 70 – on his way to a two-shot win. He entered the day five shots off the lead in a tie for sixth place, but carded four birdies and just one bogey on the round to finish at even-par 216 for the 54-hole tournament.

Sophomore Bobby Wyatt from Mobile entered the final round tied for third place and shot 3-over 75 to finish in a tie for fifth at 5-over 221. Sophomore Cory Whitsett and junior Lee Knox both posted 7-over-par totals of 223 to finish in a tie for 12th. Knox shot 73 Sunday while Whitsett shot 75. Hunter Hamrick, a senior from Montgomery, finished tied for 18th at 224 after shooting 76 in the final round.

The Alabama golf team will begin the 2012 portion of its schedule on Feb. 19 at the Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
