Two Tide Golfers On Hogan Watch List

University of Alabama golfers Cory Whitsett and Justin Thomas have been named to the 2012 watch list for the prestigious Ben Hogan Award presented by Baird Private Wealth Management, in association with Colonial Country Club, The Friends of Golf (FOG), and the Golf Coaches Association of America.

The award is presented annually to the top men's NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer, taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during a 12-month period.

Alabama is represented by young players, a sophomore and a freshman

Whitsett, a native of Houston, Texas, is second on the team with a 72.27 scoring average this season. The sophomore won the Western Refining All-American Classic in a playoff and is 42nd in the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. He owns two career tournament wins, five top-five finishes and a career-scoring average of 71.67.

Thomas a freshman from Goshen, Ky., leads the Crimson Tide with a 71.42 stroke average and ranks 10th in the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. He won his first career college tournament with a victory at the Carpet Capital Collegiate to open 2011-12 season and has two top-five finishes. Thomas also won the 2012 Jones Cup Invitational with an even-par total.

There are 28 on the watch list. The 10 Hogan Award semifinalists will be announced April 11 with three finalists chosen on May 10. The three finalists will be invited to Colonial Country Club in Fourth Worth, Texas, for the Hogan Award presentation on the evening of May 21.
