Coach Spotlight: Andy Dodd

Jeff Shiflett, head coach at Pepperell High School in Lindale, Ga., has a gifted athlete in Andy Dodd on the offensive line. The Peach State prospect decided it was time to go ahead and announce his college decision with a commitment to Alabama. Coach Shiiflett talked about his star player.

"Andy is 6-foot-4, 325-pounds," said coach Shiflett. "You could see he had a lot of mobility when he was a freshman on the basketball team. His footwork around the basket just showed you what kind of athlete he is.

"We played him at tight end as a sophomore. We were fortunate to have a very good offensive line at that time. He is going to be an offensive lineman at the next level. He can play any of the five offensive line positions. He is a talented athlete with a great frame. He has a lot of upside."

Coach Shiflett talked more about Dodd's strengths and where he believes he can improve.

"For a 325-pounder he has real good footwork," he said. "We watched him at tight end last year; you could see that. He moves extremely well. He comes off the ball. We are a run-oriented offense . Our offensive line coach does a real good job with the zone blocking. I think his transition is going to be easier than most.

"He is going to be our backside tackle this year. That's where he is going to play for us. I definitely think pass blocking is an area he needs to focus on. Just basic stuff like that."

Dodd informed his head coach of the decision during the weekend.

"Andy called me Sunday night and told me he was ready," Shiflett said. "He went over to their practice on Saturday. His mind was made up. That's where he wanted to go. There wasn't any reason to wait.

"He had offers from Alabama, LSU, Florida State, Mississippi State, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Miami and South Carolina."
