UA Golfer Whitsett Gets Recognition

The honors continued to roll in for Alabama men's golfer Cory Whitsett on Wednesday when the Southeastern Conference and Golf World selected the sophomore as the Golfer of the Week following his victory at the Linger Longer Invitational.

Whitsett tied the Alabama record in relation to par with an 8-under 64 in the final round of the Linger Longer Invitational on Sunday. His round included a double eagle on the par-5 second hole at the Great Waters Course at Reynolds Plantation and an eagle-2 on the par-4 16th hole. He holed out with an eight iron on both shots.

He then won the playoff over Georgia's Nicholas Reach by making birdie the first three times they played the 18th hole for halves and eagle on the fourth playoff hole for the win. In his 22 holes during the final round of the Linger Longer Invitational, Whitsett was 13-under par with a double eagle, two eagles and seven birdies.

It was the second medalist honor of the season for Whitsett, who has now won the Linger Longer Invitational both times he has competed. His play also helped Alabama capture the team title with a 14-shot victory over the Bulldogs. The Crimson Tide has now won its last two tournaments and three of the four they have played in this spring.

Whitsett is 14th in the most recent GolfWeek/Sagarin Performance Index, ranks second on the team with a 71.52 scoring average (.08 vs. par) and sixth in the SEC. He is 24-under par (-1.60 per round) in his last five events with two medalist honors and three top-five finishes.

Whitsett was also selected as the GolfWeek National Player of Week on Tuesday.
