Grand Slam HR Keys Tide Sweep
Alabama was out-hit by Mississippi State, but the Crimson Tide took a 9-3 victory at the MSU Softball Stadium Sunday to take all three games from the Bulldogs. The second-ranked Tide is now 35-1 overall and 12-1 in SEC play.
Alabama will return home to host LSU in a three-game conference series at Rhoads Stadium. The three-game set will begin on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. CDT. The contest will air on ESPNU.
Sophomore Jackie Traina earned the win to improve to a perfect 21-0 on the season. Traina allowed two runs – one earned -- on seven hits while striking out five in six innings.
Alabama had only six hits on the day, compared to nine for the Bulldogs, but in the fourth inning Bama made them count. With the score tied at 1-1 after three innings, Kaila Hunt hit her team-leading 14th home run of the year on the first pitch to lead off the fourth.
Alabama then loaded the bases. And freshman Danae Hays cleared them with her first career grand slam. Hunt added a second RBI in the inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Kayla Braud from third for a 7-1 lead.
Mississippi State fell to 19-18 overall and 3-13 in SEC games.
Alabama scored its 65th first-inning run of the season as Cassie Reilly-Boccia singled home Jennifer Fenton, who had singled and stolen second.
Reilly-Boccia added another run on the day for the Tide as she hit a sacrifice fly to score Braud from third. Braud started the inning with her third walk and then stole her second base of the game. Her score made it 8-2.
Braud ended the scoring for the Tide with a bases-loaded ground out RBI in the seventh.
