Alabama: Recruiting five-stars

The University of Alabama has been successful in signing five-star prospects since Nick Saban's arrival in Tuscaloosa. The Tide coaching staff continues to recruit the nation's best players in hopes of continued success on the field.

A total of 14 five-star prospects have signed with Alabama since 2008 according to FoxSports/Scout.com rankings. The Tide has signed three five-stars in each recruiting class except 2009 when they signed two. They might sign more than three in the class of 2013.

The 2008 class featured several elite signees including Julio Jones, Marcell Dareus, Dont'a Hightower, Courtney Upshaw, Mark Barron, Terrence Cody, Barrett Jones, Michael Williams, Robert Lester and 2009 Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram.

Alabama is doing well again in the class of 2013 with five of the nine commitments rated among the FoxSports/Scout.com National 100. Alabama signed only six National 100 prospects in the 2012 class, considered the No. 1 or No. 2 class in the country. The 2008 class also had only six National 100 recruits.

The majority of five-star prospects Alabama has signed since 2008 have worked out very well for the Tide.

Julio Jones was selected in the top 10 of the NFL draft in 2011. Trent Richardson, Dre Kirkpatrick and Mark Barron are projected first rounders in the NFL Draft April. Nico Johnson, Trey DePriest and Demarcus Milliner will start for the Tide's defense this fall. Cyrus Kouandjio projects as the starting left tackle.

Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix saw significant playing time as a freshman last season. He also has a chance to start in the secondary in 2012. Phillip Sims will continue as backup quarterback to AJ McCarron at this point. Tyler Love was the one five-star signed by Alabama in 2008 who never saw substantial playing time in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama brings in three five-stars from the 2012 class this summer, Landon Collins, Reggie Ragland and Cyrus Jones. Collins and Ragland are physically ready for the SEC. Jones has dangerous speed and a chance to become a star with the ball in his hands.

Alabama has one five-star commitment in Reuben Foster, the nation's No. 1 linebacker from LaGrange-Troup County, Ga.

O.J. Howard, from Prattville-Autauga Academy, Ala., is committed to the Tide and ranked the No. 36 overall prospect. Howard should earn the additional star when the rankings are expanded.

Tide commitments Altee Tenpenny, Ardarius Stewart, and Tyren Jones are also ranked among the National 100.

It's been a while since a program has landed the top two overall prospects in the country. USC was the last team in 2007 when they signed Everson Griffen and Joe McKnight. The Trojans signed four top 10 prospects that year which also included running back Marc Tyler and linebacker Chris Galippo.

Alabama had a special year in 2011 when they snagged three of the top 10 prospects which included Cyrus Kouandjio, Trey DePriest and Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix. Kouandjio is the highest rated prospect signed by Alabama in the Nick Saban era. He was ranked the No. 2 overall prospect in the country. Julio Jones was No. 3 overall his senior year.

Reuben Foster, the No. 2 prospect in the country, is already committed to Alabama. He can also make a strong claim for the nation's top prospect.

Several five-stars have Alabama among their short list of favorites.
