Alabama Has Two Honored By SEC
Alabama went to Auburn and took a midweek doubleheader, then went to Mississippi State and swept a three-game series over the weekend.
Alabama infielder Kaila Hunt was SEC Player of the Week and right-hander Jackie Traina was league Pitcher of the Week for their efforts as the Crimson Tide improved to 12-1 in the SEC and 35-1 overall.
Hunt, a native of Evans, Ga., belted four home runs in the five games. She batted .438 (7-16), scored seven runs, and drove in five runs. She had at least one homer in three of the five games, a hit in four of the five games, and a run in each game.
In the second game of a doubleheader at number 24 Auburn, Hunt had three hits – two home runs and a double. In the final two games at Mississippi State, she had home runs in each game.
She leads the team with 14 home runs and 38 runs batted in, both career highs.
Traina, a native of Naples, Fla., earned wins in four of the five victories tallied by Game and had a save in the fifth win. She posted a 1.50 earned run average and struck out 34 in 28 innings while holding opponents to a .176 average.
Traina showed her durability in the doubleheader on the road at Auburn as the right-hander threw every pitch in the twin-bill to earn both wins. Traina lost a no-hitter with two outs in the seventh inning in the victory to start the doubleheader against the Tigers and then struck out nine in the nightcap.
To open the series against Mississippi State, Traina went the entire seven innings to record the win. On Saturday, Traina came in the seventh to earn her first save of the season, striking out two in the final frame. On Sunday, Traina went six innings to earn her fourth victory of the week to improve to a perfect 21-0 on the season.
This is the second time this season Alabama has produced both the SEC Player of the Week and SEC Pitcher of the Week. Two weeks ago Bama's Jennifer Fenton was player of the week and Traina was pitcher of the week. Earlier this year Amanda Locke was the SEC Player of the Week.
This week Alabama hosts LSU in an important SEC Series. The Tigers are 9-1 in SEC games, 26-8 overall.
