Richardson, the Doak Walker Award recipient and Heisman Trophy finalist continued a recent trend of an Alabama running back being the first to be selected at the position. In fact, the New Orleans Saints traded into the first round for the rights to pick Mark Ingram at number twenty-eight in the 2011 NFL Draft.
For the second year in a row a Crimson Tide offensive performer was a highly coveted choice. Multiple picks were offered last year by the Atlanta Falcons to secure the rights to wide receiver Julio Jones. Trent Richardson is looking to improve the ground game of a franchise ranked 28th in rushing (95.7/ypg).
