Tide Softball Has Six All-Region

Alabama softball continues to pick up honors. In fact, the Crimson Tide did something this season that no other college squad accomplished. Bama had six players selected first team All-South Region in voting by members of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Third-ranked Alabama has had six players selected for all-region honors in the past, in 2009. And there were five other teams in the nation with six selected this season.

The Crimson Tide team of Coach Patrick Murphy, though, was the only team in America to have six players earn First Team All-District.

Alabama honorees are seniors Cassie Reilly-Boccia (first base), Jennifer Fenton (outfield), and Amanda Locke (utility and designated player); junior Kaila Braud (outfield); and sophomores Kaila Hunt (shortstop) and Jackie Traina (pitcher and utility).

The all-region players are eligible for NFCA All-America, which will be announced May 30.

Five of the 129 teams with at least one honoree had six on all-region teams. In addition to Bama, they were number two Arizona State, number seven Louisiana-Lafayette, number 12 Oregon, and number 15 UCLA. Two teams – Louisiana-Lafayette and number five Tennessee – had five first team selections.

Reilly-Boccia earned all-region for the third time as she enters the weekend with a .333 batting average and has nine home runs and 43 runs batted in. She has earned 42 walks and has a .511 on-base percentage.

Hunt is a first time honoree and earned the spot by leading the Tide with 18 home runs and 64 RBI while batting .323. She has a .735 slugging percentage with six doubles and two triples.

This is Braud's third consecutive season as a first team pick. She is batting .356 with 36 stolen bases and 53 runs scored. She has walked 33 times and has 10 doubles and leads the team in multi-hit games with 18 and in hits (58).

This is the second consecutive year for Fenton to be selected and first year for first team pick. She leads the Tide with a .361 average, 56 runs, and 39 stolen bases. She has four home runs, three triples, 11 doubles, and 34 RBI.

Traina was named first team for the second time. She has a 33-2 record with 281 strikeouts in 218 1/3 innings. She has a 1.73 earned run average and has held opponents to a .187 batting average. She was Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Year. As a hitter, she bats .313 with nine home runs and 29 RBI.

Locke was selected for the second time. She has a career-high .346 batting average with 17 home runs and 51 RBI. She has a slugging percentage of .787 with seven doubles and a triple. She was the winning pitcher in Alabama's victory over Florida for the SEC Tournament championship.

Alabama is the number two seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Crimson Tide is host of the Tuscaloosa Regional, which gets under way at Rhoads Stadium Friday. Bama opens play against Tennesse-Martin at 6 p.m. Friday following the 3 p.m. game featuring Georgia Tech against South Alabama.
