With 18 commits in the fold already, the Alabama football staff is really narrowing down its wish-list for the Class of 2013. While the class is sitting at No. 8 in America as of August 2, there is still time (and available prospects) to vault into the top-five sooner than later.
As it stands currently, the staff has verbal commits from:
One (1) Offensive Tackle – Leon Brown
One (1) Defensive End - Jonathan Allen
One (1) Defensive Tackle – Darius Paige
One (1) Linebacker – Walker Jones
One(1) Long-snapper – Cole Mazza
- When looking at a school like Alabama, in the SEC where only 25 players are allowed to be brought in per class, you must choose your spots. It's safe to assume that wide receiver, quarterback, tight end, guard, long-snapper and possibly cornerback are locked in – meaning the staff won't be making it a priority to target those positions as much as others.
With that in mind, let's look at the elite undeclared prospects in the mix.
The former Georgia commit has opened things back up and Alabama is leading the way at this point. Tennessee and Georgia are still in the mix, but those SEC programs have some catching up to do before Henry pulls the trigger in September.
Alabama's chances of landing him: 60%
The second Floridian on the Big Board also has the Tide in the thick of it, with Florida as the other big-time contender. Walker has set an announcement date of August 24, though it should be taken with a grain of salt considering how many times the versatile lineman has pushed his decision back.
Alabama's chances: 50%
Thomas has not been able to visit Tuscaloosa just yet, but he has confirmed that he will take an official to campus sometime this fall. The visit will be big considering he has already previously seen Florida State and Miami (FL), the other major players for his services. The Seminoles are currently a step ahead of everyone else, but this battle may not be settled until National Signing Day.
Alabama's chances: 40%
America's top offensive tackle in 2013 has kept things quiet for the most part, but ‘Bama is near the top of his list along with Georgia and Florida. The Bulldogs may be the team to beat currently, but the six months of time before he is allowed to sign his name on the dotted line is enough for either trailing school to make a push or seal the deal.
Alabama's chances: 33%
Adams maintains that he, too, will not come to a public decision before February 6. He has yet to name favorites, but he has visited Alabama along with several SEC schools of late.
Alabama's chances of landing him: 25%
Conner is known for his lack of need to speak to the media, but it is believed to be another SEC battle for his services. Most prospects from his high school elect to go with the hometown Rebels, but Conner's elite status (No. 2 ranked safety) would make it a far from surprising if he chose to play for more prominent programs.
Alabama's chances: 25%
Bell has seven schools in the mix currently, and Alabama is jocking for position with Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State, Tennessee, Texas and Vanderbilt. With so many schools in the mix, it will be tough for the Tide to close considering his familiarity with the Vols and his well-documented liking towards the Buckeyes.
Alabama's chances: 15%
While the cornerback position seems to be stable with a pair of players considered solid verbals, in-state star Marquez White is mulling his options. He was offered by Alabama after committing to Florida State, and the belief is that a flip to the Tide is more than likely.
The running back spot remains one of intrigue as well. Henry could be the final piece to the puzzle, but Norcross (Ga.) 4-star speedster Alvin Kamara is high on the reigning National Champions as well. Both players are looking to commit in the next month-or-so, and each picking the same school is unlikely. Tenpenny, who is already committed, is set to take official visits – to there may more motion than expected at the position.
Tyrone Crowder is an interesting case. The four-star offensive lineman from Rockingham (N.C.) Richmond High was high on Alabama, but he has not been contacted as much of late by the staff. If Tunsil were to choose to go somewhere other than UA, will it be too late to catch up with Crowder?
