Alabama's Wyatt Has Amateur Medal
The 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship began on Monday with a field of 312 players competing in 36 holes of stroke play. The field was pared to the low-64 scores following Tuesday's final round of stroke play.
Wednesday begins six rounds of match play to determine a champion. The championship is scheduled to conclude with a 36-hole final on Sunday morning.
Jerry Pate in 1974 is the only Alabama player to win a U.S. Amateur.
Wyatt, a native of Mobile, captured medalist honors after 36 holes, carding a 9-under-par 132, two strokes better than the next competitor. The 9-under total also tied the record for lowest 36-hole stroke-play total in the U.S. Amateur's 117 year history, joining Gregor Main (2011) and Hank Kim (1994).
"I didn't think about (the record) going into today, but it's very humbling to have part of that record," Wyatt told USGA.com. "They change courses every year and there have been a lot of courses that par is higher than 70, 71. But it's an honor. There have been a lot of great names to play in this championship and to do that certainly means a lot, but I have a lot of work to do this week."
The junior All-America will tee off at 2:10 p.m. CDT Wednesday in first-round play against Taylor Hancock of Clearwater, Fla.
Thomas, of Goshen, Ky., also qualified for Wednesday's match play, posting a 2-under 139 to finish in a tie for 13th. He was to face Barry Dyche, of Charlotte, N.C., on Wednesday morning.
Junior Cory Whitsett shot 3-under 67 on day two, but the low round was not enough to resurrect his 7-over 78 from day one. The junior's two-day total of 145 missed the cut by just two stokes, finishing tied for 82nd.
Also competing was Trey Mullinax, who finished tied for 120th, carding a 6-over 147.
