With 18 commits in the fold and just seven spots left, each pledge going forward will be considered a big one for the Alabama Crimson Tide - and we will know about one elite talent right away.
Five-star defensive line prospect Demarcus Walker is set on announcing his decision before a live television audience on Friday. While he maintains several teams like Auburn and Tennessee are still in the hunt, most believe it has been an Alabama - Florida battle all along. Walker, who is a senior at Jacksonville (Fla.) Sandalwood, last visited Gainesville for UF'S Friday Night Lights camp. He was in Tuscaloosa for an entire week just before that, and his father accompanied him for a portion of the trip.
"He was only there for one day, when we get home, me and him will talk about that," said Walker after that unofficial visit. "Him and Coach (Nick) Saban sat down, and he (Saban) came to me and said the conversation was good and my dad said the conversation was good –- so I guess the conversation was good."
Walker then reported on 'Bama's chances to land a commitment from him, saying "They are in pretty good shape."
The defensive lineman could create a domino effect for Alabama's recruiting board depending on his selection. Should he choose to go elsewhere, then players like Greg Gilmore and Kendell Beckwith become even bigger priorities for the Crimson Tide considering the need to bring in another defensive lineman. This means players a bit further down the rankings would shift into the picture more as well.
One such player, Don Bosco (N.J.) Prep defensive end Alquadin Muhammad, told FOX Sports NEXT on Wednesday that he is planing on taking an official visit to Tuscaloosa. Alabama is one of more than 40 offers he possesses at this point.
While Walker can set things off defensively, his announcement will likely be a springboard to learning the fate of another five-star talent. Running back Derrick Henry has been leaning towards the Tide since de-committing from Georgia, and he has hinted at a decision anytime between now and September. In the Tide's perfect world, both Walker and Henry would pledge in a matter or weeks or even days.
Even if both players verbal to Nick Saban, a handful of spots remain in what should shape-up to be a top-5 recruiting class in 2013. Plenty of big fish remain led by America's No. 1 offensive line prospect Laremy Tunsil, No. 2 outside linebacker Matthew Thomas, No. 2 wideout Robert Foster, No. 2 safety Antonio Connor and No. 4 cornerback Mackensie Alexander. Each of the aforementioned players has Alabama high on his list, though decisions may not be made anytime soon.
