McCarron Continues On Record March
Alabama's last chance at victory ended two yards short of the Texas A&M end zone in the final two minutes of play. A.J. McCarron, who had thrown almost 300 passes without an interception going into the Crimson Tide's game against the Aggies, tossed two in Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday night. The second ended any real hope of victory as A&M held on for a 29-24 win.
McCarron saw his passes without an interception streak come to an end as his third pass of the ballgame was deflected off the hands of Kenny Bell and picked off by Sean Porter in the first quarter. With the interception his streak ends at 292 pass attempts, the second longest in SEC history.
But the reason Alabama was in position to win the game was because with just over four minutes to play, McCarron and Bell hooked up on a 54-yard pass to the Texas A&M 6-yard line.
McCarron had previously thrown a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, 54-yard pass to Amari Cooper. Thus, McCarron continued his climb up the Alabama single season and career lists for touchdown passes. He now has 20 touchdown passes this season, which ties him with Greg McElroy, who set the record in 2010,
For his career, McCarron (2010-present) has 39 touchdown passes. John Barker Wilson (2005-08) leads with 47 career TD passes, followed by Brodie Croyle (2002-05) with 41 and McElroy (2007-10) tied with McCarron at 39.
Alabama continues to have a slim margin in the series against Texas A&M. Bama leads 3-2. This was the first game between the two in Tuscaloosa.
Alabama drops to 21-7 against the Associated Press Top 25 over the past four seasons and 12-4 against AP top 10 teams.
With T.J. Yeldon's 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter against Texas A&M, Alabama raised its current total of consecutive games in which it scored to 152 – the longest streak in program history.
Amari Cooper hauled in six passes for 136 yards. It was his second career 100 yard game.
Alabama has scored at least one rushing touchdown in all but one game this season. The Tide has scored two or more in seven games, including five in a row.
Senior Jeremy Shelley is the only kicker in the nation yet to miss an extra point or a field goal in 2012. Thus far, Shelley has hit all 43 of his extra point attempts and all nine of his field goals.
Alabama punter Cody Mandell recorded two 60 yards punts. He has three 60 yard punts in the last three games and had punts over 50 yards or more twice in each of the last three games.
Former Texas A&M players who played for Coach Paul Bryant before Bryant returned to Alabama as head coach were among those honored in festivities during the weekend. Among those honored were Gene Stallings, who later coached a national championship team at Alabama, and John David Crow, who was Bryant's only Heisman Trophy winner. Crow was later running backs coach at Alabama when the Crimson Tide made the transition to the wishbone in 1971.
