Alabama Football At Dynasty Level

These numbers are beginning to get somewhat mind-boggling. Alabama has had many great eras of football, but what has been happening under Nick Saban unquestionably puts Bama at dynasty level.

On Monday night, Alabama wons its second consecutive national championship and third in four years with a 42-14 thumping of number one ranked Notre Dame at the BCS National Championship Game at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. It is the only time a school has won back-to-back BCS championships, and the Tide will be the only team that can do it since the final BCS event is next season.

For decades, the Crimson Tide has been considered among the elite of college football programs. For the moment, put Bama in a class of its own.

Nick Saban is the first coach to win back-to-back BCS National Championships. He is also the only coach to have won three at one school and the only one to have won them at two different colleges. He coached LSU to the 2003 national championship and has won the title at Alabama in 2009, 2011, and now 2012.

For Alabama, it adds to the list of national championships. Depending on how one counts, the Crimson Tide now has 15 titles, including 10 that are BCS and/or poll championships.

In the past four years Alabama has a record of 49-5, an average of just over 12 wins per season. Consider that when Notre Dame went 12-0 in regular season play that it was the all-time record for wins by the Fighting Irish.

In 2009, Alabama was 14-0; in 2010, the Tide was 10-3; in 2011, Bama was 12-1; and this year it is 13-1.

In the past four years Alabama has won four bowl games, three of them BCS National Championship games. Bama defeated Texas 37-21 at the end of the 2009 season at the Rose Bowl. Texas came into the game with a 13-0 record. In 2010, Bama defeated Michigan State, 49-7, at the Capital One Bowl. The Spartans came into the game with an 11-1 record. Last year the Tide beat a 13-0 LSU team by 21-0 at the Louisiana Superdome. Notre Dame came into the BCS Championship Game at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens with a 12-0 record.

Alabama's past four years have seen the Tide defeat teams with a combined record of 49-1. In the three BCS National Championship[ Games, the Alabama victims were three undefeated teams with a combined record of 38-0.

LSU in 2011 and Notre Dame this season were ranked number one going into the games against Alabama.

Alabama extended its NCAA records for playing in the most bowl games (60) and winning the most bowl games (35). The Tide's on-the-field record is 35-22-3, although one bowl victory was vacated.

Earlier in the season Bama defeated Georgia to win the Southeastern Conference championship. That was the 23rd for Alabama, which is best in league history (Tennessee is second with 13). The Tide is the only team to have won at least one conference championship in every decade since the founding of the SEC in 1933.

In SEC Championship Games the past four years, Alabama defeated Florida (which had a 12-0 record in 2009) and Georgia (11-1 this year).

And Alabama hasn't been backing into these championships.

In its 15 national championship seasons, Alabama has a cumulative record of 164-8-2. In just those 10 BCS/poll title seasons, the Alabama record is 116-6-1. In SEC championship seasons, the Tide's cumulative record in SEC games is 151-5-5.
