Tide Men's Golf Gets Recognition

What does Alabama's men's golf team to for an encore? Not much. It was close to the same old thing as the Crimson Tide was named the national Team of the Week for the second consecutive week. And also for the second consecutive week, a Bama golfer was national player of the week.

Alabama is ranked second in the nation, but the Crimson Tide has won three of its four events this year and has a runner-up finish in the fourth event. That runner-up spot was in the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegan as Bama finished behind number one Texas.

Otherwise, the Tide has been lights out, including winning the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga., last weekend. It was Bama's third straight win in that tournament.

Moreover, it was the third consecutive year that Cory Whitsett, a junior, has been the individual winner of the Linger Longer.

Alabama was a 16-shot winner in the Linger Longer at 16-under-par 560. The event was shortened to 36 holes after weather delays.

Whitsett shot a 7-under-par 137 for a one-shot win. Whitsett was a shot behind with two holes to play and birdied both the 17th and 18th to get the title.

As a result, Alabama and Whitsett were honored by Golfweek Magazine as team and player of the week.

It was the second straight week the Crimson Tide has been honored by Golfweek as a team and the second consecutive week an Alabama golfer was named the National Player of the Week (Justin Thomas on March 18).

It was Whitsett's fourth-career tournament victory, which moved him into a tie for fourth in school history with Jerry Pate and Bud Cauley. Whitsett ranks eighth in the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index and is second on the team with a 71.15 scoring average. He is a cumulative 7-under-par for the season.

Alabama returns to action on April 6-7, at the Aggie Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M at The Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
