More Golf Awards For Tide's Whitsett

There's an old joke in Alabama that the NCAA should have a branch office in Auburn. To paraphrase, Golfweek Magazine, which ranks college teams and players and makes college golf awards, might do well to have an office in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama junior Cory Whitsett was named both the Golfweek and Southeastern Conference Player of the Week following his victory at the Aggie Invitational this past weekend in Bryan, Texas.

It was the second straight win for Whitsett as well as the second Player of the Week honors in as many tournaments. He also won Golfweek and SEC honors after winning the Linger Longer Invitational.

The Alabama team also won those tournaments, two of five this season and four in the spring session of the season in five starts. Bama's lone tournament without a victory was a runner-up spot.

Whitsett shot 8-under-par 208 with a final round 70 in the Aggie Invitational to edge teammate Bobby Wyatt by one shot and Scott Strohmeyer by two shots. He opened with back-to-back rounds of 69 on the tournament's first day.

It was Whitsett's fifth-career tournament victory, which moved him into a tie for second in school history with Steve Lowery. Whitsett ranks third in the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index and now leads the team with a 70.96 scoring average. He is a cumulative 15-under-par for the season and 44 under in his last six events.

Alabama returns to action on April 19-21, looking to defend its title at the SEC Championships at the Seaside Course at the Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simon's Island, Ga.
