Alabama Women's Golf Five Back

TEMPE, Ariz. – The second-ranked Alabama women's golf team is in fourth place Friday after shooting 4-under-par 284 the first round of the PING/ASU Invitational on the par-72, 6,233-yard ASU Karsten Golf Course.

Alabama is five shots off the lead of sixth-ranked UCLA, who carded a 9-under-par round of 279. No. 3 Duke is in second place at 8-under 280 with top-ranked Southern California in third place at 5-under 283, one shot ahead of Alabama.

"We hit the ball really well today and had a lot of good opportunities," Crimson Tide Coach Mic Potter said. "We didn't make as many as we would like, but that is golf. The conditions were perfect; the golf course was perfect, so scores are out there. We just have to convert a few more of them going forward."

Freshman Emma Talley fired the lowest round of her young career with a 4-under-par 68. She carded a bogey-free round that consisted of birdies on the second, fifth, ninth and 14th hole. She shot a 32 on her opening nine holes and closed with 36 on the par-37 back nine. It was her first round at Alabama in the 60s and she is tied for third entering play on Saturday.

"It was a pretty boring round really," Potter said. "She had a chance to birdie about every hole and capitalized on a few. Emma is very capable of playing that way, and it is just a matter of time before she is doing that all the time."

Sophomore Daniel Lendl matched her lowest round at Alabama with a 2-under-par 70 on Friday. She is tied for 11th after making four birdies and two bogeys in her opening round. Senior Jennifer Kirby shot even-par 72 with birdies on No. 10 and No. 14 and bogeys on the eighth and 13th. She is tied for 27th position.

Junior Stephanie Meadow made two bogeys on the final six holes to finish at 2-over-par 74 and is tied for 41st entering the second round. Fellow junior Hannah Collier was the Crimson Tide's drop score on Friday with a 4-over-par 76.

Alabama will play with No. 22 Texas and No. 16 UC-Davis during Saturday's second round in Tempe. Texas and UC-Davis both shot 286 for a tie for fifth. The Crimson Tide then return home for the SEC Championship at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham on April 19-21.
