Nation's Top Player Signs With Bama

Alabama Men's Golf Coach Jay Seawell announced the signing of the nation's top-ranked recruit, Robby Shelton, to national letter of intent for the 2013 class on Thursday.

Shelton, a native of Wilmer, joins Gavin Moynihan, who signed last fall, as part of the Alabama's 2013 signing class.

"If we want to continue to be one of the top programs in the nation, we are going to have to continue to recruit at a high level," Seawell said. "Robby is the best player in the country, and we are very excited to have him as part of our program. The heart of our recruiting is the state of Alabama, and we are even more excited that he is a product of St. Paul's and the Mobile area."

Shelton is No. 1 in the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Polo Golf Rankings, first in the Golfweek Junior Boys rankings and a Rolex Junior All-American.

He won the 2012 Junior PGA Championship with an 8-under-par total of 209 (70-67-72) at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind. Shelton also won the 2012 Junior Players Championship (69-72-64-70/275) at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., by sinking a putt on the final hole for a one-shot victory.

He was a member of the 2012 United States Junior Ryder Cup team. He is a two-time Alabama High Schools Activities Association Class 5A state individual champion and a four-time winner of his age group at the Future Masters.

Shelton finished 15th in the stroke-play portion of the 2012 U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills and won his round of 64 match in match play before bowing out in the round of 32.

Shelton was the runner-up at the 2013 Terra Cotta Invitational, the 2012 AJGA Polo Junior Golf Classic (73-69/142) and tied for second at the 2012 Junior Invitational at Sage Valley. He finished fourth at the 2011 FootJoy Invitational and second at the 2010 AJGA Junior at Steelwood.
