After Rainout, Tide Prepares For MSU
Alabama has improved to 27-18 overall and 11-9 in Southeastern Conference play. Bama is in third place in the SEC Western Division and sixth place overall in the league.
After the Crimson Tide blanked Texas A&M in the top of the first inning, Alabama scored four runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single by Austen Smith and a two run home run by Brett Booth. After the Booth home run, the umpires called the game due to rain and play never resumed. Saturday's game begins at 2 p.m., the Sunday game at 1:30.
Bama does not have a midweek game this week. The Tide will return to SEC play on Friday when Alabama travels to Mississippi State to start a three-game series. ESPNU will televise the 6:30 p.m. CDT Friday game. The Bulldogs are ranked 12th in the nation.
Alabama had some strong nominees for SEC honors this week. The Tide nominated:
For Pitcher of the Week, Justin Kamplain, sophomore left-hander from Jasper. He posted his first win of the season (he is 1-0) after throwing a career-high 7 1/3 innings in his third start. He threw seven scoreless innings to open the game and finished allowing two runs and turning in five strikeouts against only one walk.
For Player of the Week, Ben Moore, sophomore outfielder from Cullman. He batted .500 (5-10) with three doubles, a home run, two runs batted in, and four runs scored. He posted a 1.100 slugging percentage in the three games with 11 total bases. He also had two walks for a .583on-base percentage. He had the game-winning RBI with his second double of the game in the eighth inning in a road game against Southern Miss last Wednesday.
For Freshman of the Week, right-handed pitcher Ray Castillo from Seale. He made two appearances against Texas A&M and had a pair of saves. He did not allow a run or a hit in his two innings of work, throwing a scoreless ninth inning in both 3-2 wins. Castillo has now converted all eight of his save opportunities and has a 1.80 earned run average in 34 innings.
The series win over the Aggies was Alabama's fourth conference series victory of the season, topping last year's total of three. Bama also defeated Southern Miss in both games this year.
