Guarachi, Macfarlane At NCAA Tourney
Guarachi, currently ranked 36th in the nation, drew Columbia's Nicole Bartnik in the first-round matchup. The Tide senior will be making her third appearance in the NCAA Singles Championship and carries an overall record of 23-15 this season. Bartnik, the ITA's Northeast Region Senior of the Year, is ranked 73rd in singles and helped the Lions earn a share of their first Ivy League title this season.
Macfarlane, the No. 34 singles played in the nation, will take on seventh-seeded Gina Suarez-Malaguti of North Carolina in the round of 64. As Alabama's No. 1 singles player for the past three seasons, Macfarlane will be making her third-straight showing in the NCAA Singles Championship. She enters tournament play with 17 wins on the season, eight of which have come against nationally-ranked foes. Suarez-Malaguti, the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, boasts a 26-8 overall record.
In doubles first round action, top-eight seed Guarachi and Macfarlane are slated to face No. 27 Krisztina Kapitany and Mara Schmidt of Purdue. The Tide's No. 1 duo has been ranked seventh or higher all season in the national poll and enters tournament play with a 24-9 record. Kapitany and Schmidt also played at the No. 1 position for their team, compiling a 15-4 mark together. Their biggest win of the season came in 8-5 fashion against the then-No. 2 team in the nation in Michigan's Brooke Bolender and Emina Bektas.
