Tide's Botha Has Big Tennis Upset

URBANA, Ill. – Alabama's Jarryd Botha came back from a close first-set loss to take down Southern California's Emilio Gomez, the tournament's No. 6 seed, 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-5, in the first round of the NCAA Tennis Singles Championship on Wednesday.

Botha, the top player for Alabama this year, thus advances to Thursday's Round of 32, where he will take on Tulsa's Japie De Klerk.

After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, 49th-ranked Botha came back strong in the second to take a commanding 6-3 win.

In the third set, Botha and Gomez each held in their first games. Neither, however, would hold again until Gomez did so to go up 5-4. Botha went on to take the next three games and ended the match serving up an ace for the win.
