Alabama to add punter

Alabama has been able to secure top recruiting classes over the last handful of years, but it has been able to add specialists in the process. On Wednesday night, learned of a punter expected to be on the 2013 roster. He breaks down the situation inside.

Alabama sported one of the top classes in the team rankings for 2013, and it will likely add another talent to the group this fall.

Punter Adrian Lamothe, who has always planned on punting in college and specifically for an FBS school, hopes to be on the 2013 roster.

"I've spoken with the coaches and they said they wanted me in the team this fall because Cody Mandell is leaving next season," he told late Wednesday evening."So they expressed great interest in me and told me to visit the campus.

"I've spoken by phone with the coach and he told me to make the admission as soon as possible."

Lamothe considers himself an Alabama commitment, although he won't be on scholarship. Just as three-star quarterback Luke Del Rio did in December, he will walk-on to the team.

"I am really excited about everything, it's a dream come true," said the Monterrey (Mexico) Tech standout, who will visit Tuscaloosa next week. "It is a walk-on opportunity, I've made the admission, I just have to wait to be accepted.

"Then it would be official."

Lamothe is a "Top 12" standout from prestigious kicking and punting coach Chris Sailer's camps. For the 2013 cycle, the Mexican is ranked No. 13 overall by Sailer at 5-foot-10, 150 pounds.

"Adrian is a phenomenal punting prospect. He has a huge leg and has proven time and time again that he is one of the most consistent punters in the nation," said Sailer on his website "Has shown that he can hit 5-plus second hang time punts. Also punts very well under pressure. Has improved big time from camp to camp. Has the skills to play at the D1 college level. A fine young man with a great attitude and work ethic. Big time prospect!!!"

Lamothe reports a pair of Division II scholarship offers, a "50 percent" offer from Fordham and considerable interest from TCU, also as a walk-on candidate. But Alabama's prestige was too much to pass up.

"When the coaches contacted me and I was very excited," he admitted. "Here in Mexico, it is a dream come true to play college football at any D1 (school).

"But Alabama is just the best college football team in the last four years."
