Tide Men's Golf Wins First Match

Alabama has moved into second round play of the match play section of the NCAA Men's Golf Tournament. The Crimson Tide defeated New Mexico by a 4-1 margin Friday at the Capital City Club in Atlanta.



Alabama will play the host team, Georgia Tech, which won by a stroke match deciding hole to down UNLV, in the second round Saturday beginning at 10:45 a.m. EDT (9:45 central).

California, the nation's top-ranked team and winner of the 54-hole medal play portion of the tournament that determined the eight teams to play match play for the NCAA championship, defeated Arizona State, 3-1.

Illinois was something of a surprise, defeating defending champion Texas, 3-2.

California will take on Illinois Saturday, teeing off at 10 a.m. EDT.

Winners Saturday advance to the championship event at 10 a.m. EDT Sunday.

The Crimson Tide got wins by Bobby Wyatt (2&1) over Victor Perez; Scott Strohmeyer (4&3) over Benjamin Bauch; Cory Whitsett (5&4) over John Catlin; and Justin Thomas (4&3) over James Erkenbeck. The win for the Lobos came from their number one player, Gavin Green, over the Tide's No. 4, Trey Mullinax (5&4)
