Roberts recaps busy summer

HOOVER, Ala. -- Stephen Roberts and Opelika (Ala.) High have one goal after losing the state championship last year, to get back there again and seal the deal this time around. That had plenty to do with his early commitment, but that doesn't mean schools are slowing down on the four-star cornerback. caught up with him at the National Select 7-on-7 National Championships.

Stephen Roberts got his college decision out of the way in April, but the recruiting process only ended there for select teams on his list.

Alabama snagged his pledge, but he's still hearing from another pair of recent national powers in recruiting and the Crimson Tide staff hasn't slowed on him either.

"(Since committing) It's been great, Auburn has come in a lot and Miami is recruiting me too," said the Opelika (Ala.) standout. "Alabama still is, too. I talk to Kirby Smart all the time.

"Schools make you want to think about things, so it makes things hard...but I'm fully committed to Alabama."

Though his recruitment seems all but over, the 6-foot, 185-pound cornerback is wrapping-up a summer that included a lot of transition in between individual goals.

"It's been good, we've been working out really hard to try to work out and win state this year," he added. "Coach Johnson, our strength coach, has been great.

"I've wanted to focus on getting my weight up and getting stronger, plus getting better technique on defense."

The four-star has been doing so, but has had to of late without his partner in crime and close friend Jakell Mitchell. His teammate, who is committed to Auburn, tore his ACL earlier in the offseason and he's been rehabbing to try and get back as soon as possible during his senior campaign.

Though not in his presence as much as he usually is, Roberts said he's learning a lot from keeping up with Mitchell's progress and work ethic.

"He's been working hard," he said. "He is rehabbing real hard. His machine exercise, that bends his knee, he was supposed to be at 30 and he's already at 35 so you can tell he's a hard worker and he's trying to get better before the season starts.

"It makes me work harder because he's a piece of the puzzle so I've got to step up and fill that piece."

Though he admires his hard work in rehab, it hasn't slowed Roberts' own recruitment of Mitchell and vice versa.

"I've been trying to get him to Alabama and he's been trying to get me to Auburn," he admitted. "I've been talking to him about the education and coaching-wise, that's all we really talk about."

Recruiting aside, the Bulldogs are looking to make an impression at the National Select 7-on-7 National Championships on Thursday and Friday.

"We came out here to be the best we can be, and to win it all," he said. "We want that championship."

FOX Sports NEXT/ currently ranks Roberts as the No. 36 cornerback prospect nationally for the class of 2014.
