Tide's Talley Wins U.S. Women's Amateur
Talley, from Princeton, Ky., closed out Yueer "Cindy" Feng on the 35th hole of the final match with a par on the 154-yard par-3 17th hole.
Talley, who begins her sophomore year at The Capstone later this month, went back and forth with Feng on the first 18 holes of the final. Talley won the 18th hole with a birdie on the par-4, 438-yard 18th to enter the second half of the final with a 1-up lead.
Talley won the 20th and 22nd hole to extend her lead to 3 up before Feng battled back, winning three straight holes to square the match. Talley birdied the match's 28th hole to take a 1-up lead, a lead she would never relinquish.
She extended the lead to 2 up at the 30th hole only to see Feng strike back with a win on the 31st hole. The next three holes were halved before Talley claimed victory on the 35th (17th hole) of the match.
Talley is the first Alabama player to win the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship. She finished her freshman year at Alabama with a 73.00 scoring average that ranked second on the team while earning second-team All-America honors. Former Tide players Brooke Pancake (2011) and Jennifer Kirby (2012) advanced as far as the semifinals.
Talley will rejoin her Crimson Tide teammates when school starts at Alabama on August 21st. UA begins its 2013-14 schedule on Sept. 9, at the Dale McNamara Fall Preview at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. Teammate Cammie Gray also advanced to the round of 16 at the U.S. Women's Am while Stephanie Meadow made it to the round of 32.
