Alabama Solidifies Number One Rank
After Alabama's 49-42 win over then sixth-ranked Texas A&M in College Station Saturday night, there was some conversation that perhaps the Crimson Tide was not the best team in college football. The real discussion should have been whether the Aggies should have been dropped in the rankings.
Only one sportswriter in the Associated Press poll and only one coach in the USA Today Coaches Poll had reservations about number one. Alabama received 59 of the 60 first place votes in the AP poll and 61 of the 62 in the Coaches Poll.
To say that Bama passed a tough test is an understatement. Texas A&M has an exceptionally good team with returning Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel. Although the polls are not particularly important after three weeks, there seems some injustice that the Aggies were dropped from sixth to 10th in the AP poll and to ninth in the Coaches rankings.
Oregon got one first place vote in each poll and is second in both.
As is usual, the polls have the same top ten teams, but not in exactly the same order.
Clemson is third in the AP poll and fourth by the Coaches, which has Ohio State third. The Buckeyes are fourth in the AP poll. Stanford is fifth in both. LSU is sixth, Louisville seventh by the AP, reversed in the Coaches. Florida State is eighth in both. Georgia swaps places with A&M, ninth in the AP rankings, 10th in the coaches.
In addition to Alabama, LSU, Georgia, and Texas A&M being in the top 10, the Southeastern Conference is represented by South Carolina (12th in the AP, 13th in the Coaches), Florida (19th AP, 18th Coaches), and Ole Miss (21st AP, 22nd Coaches). Auburn was among "Others receiving votes" in both rankings.
Virginia Tech, Bama's first game victim, is also among those teams receiving votes, but not in the top 25.
