Alabama Stays Above Upset Fray
Alabama continues its majestic reign in this week's college football polls, the Associated Press rankings of sportswriters and broadcasters and the Coaches Poll conducted by USA Today. The Crimson Tide has been number one in both ratings since the pre-season as Bama has reached roughly the halfway point of the season with a 7-0 record (4-0 in Southeastern Conference games).
It is in Alabama's important fiefdom, the SEC, where most of Saturday's upsets occurred, leaving Bama and Missouri – yes, Missouri – as the league's only undefeated teams.
To get to the bottom of the issue – which is to say the top – the Crimson Tide received 55 of 60 first place votes in the AP poll and 57 of 62 Coaches' first place votes. Oregon, with three first place AP and four Coaches votes, is second in both polls. Florida State, which was a convincing winner over Clemson in a rare important ACC game, got two AP votes and one from a coach, and is third. Ohio State rounds out the top four.
The SEC has a couple of unlikely Tigers on the rise. Missouri is fifth in the AP poll and seventh by the Coaches. Auburn is 11th AP, 17th Coaches. Missouri blistered Florida and Auburn horsecollared Texas A&M. The Gators fell out of the top 25 in both polls. The Aggies are 14th in the AP, 15th by the Coaches.
South Carolina fell to 20th in both rankings after losing to Tennessee. The Vols aren't mentioned by AP voters, but did get one vote for 25th in the Coaches poll. Tennessee will be at Alabama Saturday with kickoff from Bryant-Denny Stadium at 2:30 p.m. CDT. CBS will televise the game.
LSU lost to Ole Miss Saturday, dropping the Fighting Tigers to 13th in the AP poll, 14th in the Coaches. The Rebels are among those receiving votes in both rankings.
Vanderbilt kicked Georgia out of both polls into the "Others receiving votes" category.
Thus, the SEC has six teams ranked and four others receiving votes.
